Dementia Care Reimagined

We at English Meadows recently set out to create a dementia care program that is more than just a part of their communities where residents living with dementia reside.

While our team has always had great success in caring for our residents, we recognized that we had a great opportunity to take our dementia program to the next level.

How to Choose a Dementia Care Community

Through biweekly meetings and brainstorming sessions with Dementia By Day’s Rachael Wonderlin, we began working on our brand new dementia program, Lavender Hills.

Lavender Hills is all about meeting English Meadows residents where they are on their dementia journey. Capitalizing on what we’re already known for—an inclusive, welcoming environment and our home-cooked meals—we created a dementia care program that engages residents through each step in their day.

What's Different?

As a perfect example, take our new snack program: each weekday has a different snack theme, limited only to our Lead Chef’s imagination. In coordination with the Activity Team, Bobby’s Dining Team developed a unique way to help our residents both create and enjoy snacks. Wednesday is Trail Mix Day: residents help us make the trail mix in the morning, and at 2 PM, get to enjoy what they created earlier.

We’ve also worked to redevelop the interior design of each building to meet the needs of our residents living with dementia. Through Life Stations and hands-on Creativity Boxes (boxes of socks to sort, towels to fold, and more) our staff members are seeing our residents engaging on a whole new level. The staff is asked to assist with Creativity Boxes, since the programming is a team experience.

As you can see through just a few of our after photos here, Lavender Hills is well on its way to exceeding our expectations!
